Invest in Your Team’s Health & Wellbeing
Back pain and stress are two of the biggest causes of missed workdays, affecting productivity, morale, and overall employee well-being. According to the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) 2023/24 report:
• An estimated 33.7 million working days were lost due to work-related ill health and non-fatal workplace injuries. - Stress, depression, or anxiety accounted for 16.4 million days lost.
• Musculoskeletal disorders contributed to 7.8 million days lost.
• On average, each affected individual took around 15.5 days off work. Additionally, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that mental health issues accounted for 18.5 million sick days in the UK in 2022, with public sector workers citing mental health reasons for 13% of sick days and 7% in the private sector.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) 2023 report further highlights that musculoskeletal injuries (45%) and mental health issues (39%) are among the leading causes of short-term absences, while long-term absences are primarily caused by mental health problems (63%), acute medical conditions (51%), and musculoskeletal injuries (51%).
In addition, the HSE identifies key work-related factors that can contribute to back pain, including prolonged sitting, poor posture at workstations, and repetitive movements, all of which are common in office-based roles. Without intervention, these issues can escalate, leading to chronic pain and increased time off work. Encouraging employees to engage in regular movement, stretching, and strengthening exercises can help alleviate these risks, improving overall workforce well-being.

Why Invest in Employee Well-being?
A workplace wellness programme is more than just an employee perk—it’s an investment in your team's health, productivity, and job satisfaction. Investing in workplace wellness through movement, relaxation, and stress management techniques can:
• Reduce sickness-related absences caused by back pain and stress.
• Improve focus, energy levels, and workplace performance.
• Enhance employee satisfaction, making staff feel valued and supported.
• Reduce costs associated with sickness-related absences by improving employee health and preventing long-term health issues.
Research further supports the role of workplace wellness initiatives in reducing missed workdays. The Health at Work – An Independent Review of Sickness Absence (2011), commissioned by the UK government, highlighted that proactive health interventions can significantly decrease employee absences and improve workplace productivity. Similarly, the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) published a report on 21 October 2024 stating that nearly half of the UK workforce lacks access to essential workplace health support, such as health screenings and wellbeing programs. The RSPH advocates for a national health and work standard, emphasizing the need for structured workplace wellness initiatives to support employee health and reduce the economic burden of staff sickness.
