5 Questions to Ask Your Pilates Instructor

Whether you're brand new to Pilates or have been turning up on your mat for a while, there are a few questions that can make your sessions smoother, and a little less mysterious.

1. Do I need to speak fluent Pilates to follow along?

Not at all, you do not need to know your Hundreds from your Roll Downs before class begins. I always explain each exercise clearly, offer teaching points, and often give alternative names, even when the room is full of regulars. You will not be left behind. If the terminology feels a bit unfamiliar at first, just watch, follow along, and ask questions if needed. It all clicks with time.

2. Can you adapt exercises for injuries or health conditions?

A good instructor will always offer modifications. Asking this upfront lets you know whether your needs will be supported, and shows you value your body. It also gives your instructor a chance to flag any exercises that might need adjusting for you in advance.

3. What should I focus on if I’m a beginner?

I always encourage beginners to focus on simply doing the exercise. The movements and coordination can be unfamiliar at first, so trying to perfect breath, alignment, and core engagement all at once can feel overwhelming. Just getting a feel for the flow of class is more than enough to begin with.

4. How can I tell if I’m doing an exercise correctly?

The best instructors will teach you what an exercise should feel like, not just what it should look like. I always reassure clients that if you are moving with care and intention, you are not doing it wrong. We are all built differently, and that means movement will look different from person to person. What matters is that it is safe, effective, and mindful.

5. What can I expect in the next few days?

You might feel fine the day after class… but the day after that? Sore. Pilates DOMS tends to have a sneaky delay, even for people who exercise regularly. It is a sign your underused muscles are finally being switched on. You may also notice changes like better posture, improved awareness, or even feeling more connected to your body.

Asking the right questions helps you feel confident, informed, and supported, both in class and beyond.

Wishing you clarity and confidence in your practice,

Victoria xx
