VFJ Pilates | Questions Answered
It is easy to assume that you need to be bendy to start Pilates, but that could not be further from the truth.
This is one of the most common questions I hear, and the short answer is: no, absolutely not. Flexibility is not a requirement for Pilates. In fact, improving flexibility is one of the many benefits that regular Pilates practice can offer.

Start Where You Are
You do not need to be able to touch your toes, do the splits, or even sit cross-legged comfortably to practice Pilates. Pilates meets you where you are, and each movement can be adapted to suit your current range of motion. As you build strength and control, your flexibility may improve naturally over time.
Focus on Control, Not Contortion
Pilates is not about forcing your body into extreme, convoluted positions. It is about moving with precision, focus and control. The aim is to improve mobility, build functional strength, and create better body awareness, not to become bendy for the sake of it.
Progress at Your Own Pace
Every body is different. Some people are naturally more flexible, while others are stronger or more stable. Pilates supports all of these differences equally. You might notice small improvements in your flexibility week to week, or you might just feel looser and more mobile in everyday movements. Both are valid.
Flexibility is a Benefit, Not a Barrier
You are not expected to be flexible. This is part of what Pilates helps you with. Whether you are tight from sitting all day, recovering from injury, or just feeling stiff, Pilates offers gentle and progressive ways to move with more ease.
Your body is welcome exactly as it is. Flexibility will come in time, if it needs to.
Wishing you ease on your Pilates journey,
Victoria xx
