You do not need a fully stocked gym to do Pilates, but a few simple props can really enhance your experience.
Pilates is designed to be simple, accessible, and adaptable, which means you can get started with very little. Whether you are joining me in the studio or logging in from home, there are always ways to make the most of what you already have while gradually adding to your setup if you choose.

In-Person Classes
For in-person classes, the only thing you need to bring is yourself and a mat. In my studio and face-to-face sessions, I provide all mats and small equipment, so you can simply show up and take part without worrying about what to bring.
Online Classes and Optional Props
When it comes to online Pilates, things are a little different. While I do make every effort to minimise the amount of small props used, and many of the exercises can be done with just a mat, we do sometimes use a few such as:
Mini Pilates balls
Resistance bands
Prickly balls
Gliders or sliders
Yoga blocks
These are all optional, but they do help us vary the class, target muscles more effectively and inject a little bit of fun and laughter to the class.
At-Home Alternatives
Sometimes I suggest alternatives using things you already have at home, like:
A cushion instead of a Pilates ball
A stretchy scarf instead of a resistance band
Socks on hard floors or paper plates on carpet instead of gliders
Tennis balls or golf balls instead of prickly balls
A dog lead, belt or non-stretchy scarf instead of a yoga belt
But in certain exercises, having the actual prop can make a noticeable difference, especially for feedback and control.
If you are doing online classes regularly, it might be worth investing in a few basic props over time. But there is no need to buy everything at once.
Building Your Kit
I will never use equipment that we can't find an alternative for such as the fit ball or Pilates ring, most pieces are small and easy to store. Many people build up their kit gradually, and I always give options during class so you can join in comfortably with what you have at home.
You do not need a lot to get started, just a mat and a willingness to move.
Wishing you ease on your Pilates journey,
Victoria xx
P.S. If you are ever unsure whether you need a prop or what might work as a substitute, feel free to ask, I am always happy to help you get set up.
