Holiday movement is a bit like hotel hairdryers, there if you want it, but you are under no obligation to use it.
What I’ve Tried (and Skipped)
I have been on holidays where I swam steady lengths in the pool, ran along the beach before lunch, wandered down to the gym on a cruise ship for my usual workout, and taken part in a spinning class. I packed my trainers, and my workout gear, and made good use of them.
I have also had trips where the most movement I managed was rolling over on a sun lounger or lifting my fork toward a particularly good piece of dessert. I packed my trainers with good intentions, and left them under the bed all week. Both were valid. Both were needed.
Movement That Looks Different
Fitness on holiday can look exactly the same as when you are home, but it also doesn’t have to look like your usual routine. It doesn’t have to look like anything. You can run after the seagulls on the beach and count it as cardio. You can walk for miles sightseeing, stretch in your room, swim in the sea, or not move at all and work on your tan.
Movement is not cancelled, it is just wearing a different outfit. One that maybe doesn’t involve leggings or a mat. Perhaps it involves sandals and sunglasses, and stopping for ice-cream halfway through. Perhaps it involves exploring every tunnel and tower in a castle, and having a pic-nic in the sun. Perhaps it looks like dancing until your feet are sore, then walking home barefoot.
No Guilt in the Luggage
The trick is not to pack guilt with your sandals. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to play. You are allowed to exist without logging steps or squeezing in squats, and it doesn't matter if you lead a busy, hectic lifestyle or are retired and have chilled easy going days.
But if you do feel like a gentle stretch or a sneaky suitcase lunge whilst walking through the airport (purely accidental), that is welcome too.
There is freedom in choosing what fits. Especially when that means holiday clothes, bare feet, and nothing to prove.
Wishing you adventure, rest, and the freedom to move however you choose,
Victoria xx
