More Movement, Less Effort

When we talk about moving more during the day, people often imagine formal workouts or long structured breaks, but it does not have to be that complicated. Creating a movement friendly workday is about building in small, easy moments of activity throughout your day. No schedule shake-up required.

Start with Your Space

Set up your environment to encourage movement. Place your printer, water bottle, or phone slightly out of reach so you have to stand, or walk across the room, to use them. Keep a cushion or towel nearby to sit on the floor for certain tasks if your hips and knees are happy with that.

Stand and Shift

Alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day if you have a way to adjust your workspace. Even just shifting your weight, sitting cross-legged for a few minutes, or gently rolling through your feet can bring your body back online.

Walk-and-Talk Calls

Phone meetings are the perfect opportunity to get moving. Whether you pace around your room, take a lap outside, or march gently on the spot, walking while talking adds energy and can help you think more clearly.

Breaks That Actually Help

Use short breaks for stretches, step-touch side to side, or slow roll-downs from standing. Just two or three minutes can shift your posture and mindset. Link your break to something regular like finishing a task or making tea.

You might also try the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5 minute movement break) to help build rhythm and movement into your day.

Build in Visual Cues

Sticky notes, water bottles, or a timer can all serve as friendly nudges to get up or change positions. Think of them as little prompts to move before your body stiffens up.

Movement throughout the day does not have to be perfect or planned. It just needs to happen.
