Getting Festive: My Kind of Build-Up

There is something about this time of year that makes everything feel a little more magical, and I am absolutely here for it.

I do not really slow down before the holidays, in fact, if anything, I speed up a little. But not in a frantic, shop-til-you-drop kind of way. More in a let’s squeeze in as much festive cheer as possible kind of way.

Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, and, especially as it is one I can go all out on, I make the most of the build-up. I decorate early, switch on the fairy lights, and start collecting treat food the minute it appears on the shelves.

I wear my Christmas jumpers from the 1st of December and yes, I absolutely change my ringtone to the Coca-Cola song when that advert hits the TV. Glitter sneaks into my makeup, my hair, and even my clothes, Christmas is one of the few times of year I can get away with it without raising eyebrows, now that my student days are behind me.

In class, I try to keep the feel-good going too. We don’t play carols on repeat, but I do bring out the favourites — intervals, mini balls, glides — and we finish the final week with a relaxing prickly ball session. Behind the scenes, I’m also prepping gifts for every client who’s been to class or a 1-2-1 in the six months before Christmas. One year it was hand-embroidered bags, another year tealight holders, it is always something special, unique and hand-made.

And then there are the challenges: 12 Days of Christmas (a festive self-care countdown) and 12 Days of Fitmas, both end with a bang on Christmas Eve.

I might not slow down, but I do make space for magic. The lights, the lists, the little traditions, they’re part of what make this season feel so full of sparkle, and I do so love sparkle.
