There is something about summer evenings that makes everything feel softer, even movement.
After a day of teaching, I find myself slipping outside with a strawberry cider, my mat rolled out on the patio, a few plant pots in view, the heather and my little rock garden glowing in the low light. It is that perfect moment after the heat of the day has passed, when the coolness begins to creep in and the air starts to feel calm again.
Nothing formal. No flows. No reps.
Just a few easy stretches: arms reaching to the sky, legs gently lengthened, a twist or two for my back, maybe a full-body stretch like the one you do in bed before your feet hit the floor.
The air is still warm, but not heavy. My cat Bonnie is usually nearby. A gentle breeze drifts through the yard. There’s a flicker of candlelight, and if I sit quietly long enough, the crickets and stars start to take over.
Sometimes I stay there with music playing softly. Sometimes I stretch until the drink is gone. Other times I just breathe, enjoying the rhythm of it all — the simplicity, the quiet, the feeling of being still without needing to stop.
This is movement for pleasure. For pause. For being a little kinder to your body after a long day.
Not every evening looks like this, of course. But the ones that do, I remember them. They are slow, and simple, and just a little bit magical.
