The presents have been opened, the cheese board is a mess, and the fairy lights are still up, but the magic is starting to fray at the edges.
Some call it Twixmas, that odd, stretchy week between Christmas and New Year when nobody knows what day it is, what time it is, or whether a chocolate coin counts as breakfast. And honestly? It is a bit of a mixed bag.
I cancel most classes that week because not many are up for movement, though I do try to keep spirits up for clients with a live online candlelight Pilates session and a little virtual Christmas party (where the winners of Competition A are picked from the jar). It feels like the right kind of gentle nudge, something festive but not full-on.
I also try to keep the kids entertained, which is not always easy, but some years we manage a night in the Lakes to visit my aunt and uncle, and I do what I can to keep things feeling cheerful without tipping into chaos.
But it is not all peace and sparkle. The clutter starts to get on my nerves. I often begin placing the decorations back into their boxes, or at least start dismantling the tree so I can finally hoover underneath it. I gently suggest the kids start migrating their piles of presents back to their rooms, even if it takes a few reminders. The festive plates get washed and packed away, the glitter is hoovered from the carpet (again), and I try to reclaim a bit of floor space and headspace alike.
For me, this is when the reset really starts. I do not understand people who book a deep clean before Christmas. It always seems backwards to me, the real mess starts after, when the tinsel is shedding and the wrapping paper is long gone. That is when the floors need rescuing, the cupboards need rebalancing, and the fridge becomes a game of culinary Tetris.
It is the perfect moment for a slower pace, a few gentle plans, and maybe, finally, some quiet.
Wishing you a peaceful pause and a space to reset,
Victoria xx
